NORTON-JUXTA-KEMPSEY. Explorer's Pack.

Arthur has been reading the Time Traveller’s Guide and he thinks he has discovered something big, something very big.  If he is right he will be able to tell everyone why there were two abbots in Pershore on that day in 1204. He also thinks he knows why they shared Pershore market but he has some questions that still need to be answered.  He and Gruff are on their way to Norton-juxta-Kempsey to find answers but will he be able to recognise anything and how will he find his way around? They need your help.

WHERE TO GO

  • Drive to the centre of Norton village and take the turning by the war memorial into Hatfield Road.  The church car park is a little way up the road on the right, it may be open if not park safely at the roadside.
  • Start your exploration by the war memorial. Turn right and walk up Church Lane to the pub on the corner. Norton was once a busy little village if you look around you will see the old school, today the school is in Littleworth.  Just around the corner is a railway bridge.  Once there was a train station here.
  • Retrace your steps to the centre of the village past the old farms, watch out for the horses!
  • Keep a look out for a public footpath sign on the right near the war memorial.  Turn right and follow the path under the railway bridge to take a look at the site of the ancient manor of Woodhall.
  • Retrace your steps and find the church on the other side of Church Lane.
  • Go into the churchyard and walk all round the building if you can. If  the church is open go inside and have a good look round. Try to find the old Norman door!  Don’t forget to sign the Visitors’ Book!  Click on the yellow button to see an old photograph of the church.  What is different?  What is the same?
  • Leave the church and turn left, follow the road under the bridge towards the modern village of Brockhill.
  • Take a good look at a rather strange looking building. Imagine the 19th century soldiers on parade here. If you have time walk on and round the corner on the right to see more regimental buildings..
  • Retrace your footsteps back to the car.
